This is why it is important for businesses to optimize their websites and get high rankings on organic search engine listings for important keywords. The process of getting your website to list high on search engine listings and increase overall organic traffic to it is known as search engine optimization (SEO). Every day, there are millions of searches conducted on popular search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN. People tend to scan from top to bottom, left to right on search engine listings to look for relevant result. Therefore, if your website is position high on organic listings, you can increase the number of search engine traffic to it.

What SEO actually mean ?

SEO or Search Engine Optimization in short means to make your website more attractive to search engines. This is done by a number of ways and I will mention the very basic things in this article. A search engine and a person doesn't exactly see the webpages the same way and there are things on the page that are supposed to only be read by the engines, one of these things are the meta tags. In the meta tags you can put things like keywords and description.

First off all you need to research what keywords are relevant to your site, but seeing as you started the site up already, you probably have quite a good idea about this. If you haven't started the site yet and you are intending to make a site about a niche, just with the intention of making money, reseach will be good. And if this is the case, you might want to look into how possible it is to get a domain name that have the keywords in it. Keyword rich domain names will help your listings on certain search engines since extra weight might be put into the fact that the things people search for show in your domain name.

When you optimize your site for search engines you want to make sure you use the keywords in your title tag, the meta tags, possible image alt tags and of course in the content of the page itself. However, don't overdo this. Trying to build pages only for search engines and not for people will most often just hurt you in the long run. I believe it is John Chow (of JohnChow.com) who once wrote that he always puts people first and Google second. To me, this makes a lot of sense. It´s the visitors who should come first and then the search engines.

A research shows that 80 % of the customers reach their desired website through organic searches, when you enter any search criteria in a search engine, the search engines gives you thousands of related links. Statistics show that around 90% of people go for first two pages of the search results, and all of the users click on links which are in top 5 of the search result page. Which explains why optimizing your website to the search engine or Search Engine Optimization is so important. Organic search results are gathered by search engine's web crawlers and ranked according to relevance to search terms. The relevance is calculated by the extent of keywords matched and the number of links into that website.

The way the search engines rank their pages is a complex method and a closely guarded secret but enough of it is known that you can follow some relatively simple, low-tech practices to improve you page ranking in the search results. There is a lot to cover when you want you website to be in the top ranks but the basics start with optimizing your web page which is also called "on page optimization". By on-page optimization we mean making the web page SEO and Search engine friendly.

A Search Engine crawler mainly checks four things when it crawls a web page; the URL, the title, Meta tags and the contents. On the basis of these four, the crawler ranks the page and displays it according to relevancy of the keyword the user enters. There is more than optimizing you web pages with these four ingredients, for example, headlines, sub headlines, keyword density, words at the beginning of the page, page content, bold contents, links, site navigation, the structure of links and much more.

A Search Engine optimizer needs to make the website attractive to the search engine crawlers in terms of links present in your website. It is also essential to direct the right traffic to the website, also known as off-page optimization which includes links (inbound and outbound). Ideally, your SEO strategy should work with you target market in mind and work towards attracting the relevant target market to the site.

SEO is the bed rock of internet marketing.

The success of your internet marketing campaign all starts with a proper and ongoing optimization of your website. SEO can target a variety of search such as image search, video search, industry related search and local search. With this, you can optimize all types of content that you have and increase the overall organic traffic to your website.

SEO starts with having a search engine friendly website. Use of frames and flash to build a website is prohibited. After the website architecture is ready, SEO consultant will change the content and tags to increase their relevancy to the keywords that are related to your business. Choosing the right keywords to optimize is very important. Because, SEO is a long term process and you need to take a while to see any result from it. Whereas, a pay per click advertising campaign can put your ads up on search engine listings immediately and start driving targeted traffic to your website. Do they have well established sites with high Google PR? Are they fully optimized with listing in DMOZ, Wikipedia, and other authority websites? If there are a number of strong competitors, you may wan to look at a different aspect of your niche or even consider changing your focus.

3. Linking partners. Continuing with the theme of competition, take a look at the sites linking in to your competitors. Are the what I would consider authority websites? These are sites that have a high Google PR and have been linking to your competitors for a long time. To outrank competitive sites, you will need to attract links from high Google PR websites as well.

4. Consider your time horizon. Must you have instant #1 rankings? Most people immediately respond with a yes but truthfully, you don't necessarily need a number one ranking right out of the gate. Google isn't going to give it to you. So, you have to decide on how much time you have to achieve the best ranking possible. Depending on your time line, you may need to adjust the keyword phrases you are trying to optimize for.

5. Optimization plan. Just as you put planning into building your website, you also need to plan your search engine optimization efforts. By putting together a plan, you can work towards you goal day after day and month after month until you've achieved your desired outcome. Search engine optimization takes work. You can always use search engine optimization tools to automate some of the effort, but you still need a plan.

By focusing your efforts on the market you are facing, the competition, and other factors related to search engine optimization, you can achieve improved search engine rankings quickly. One of the biggest issues I often deal with is with individuals who want top rankings but have to first undo much of the work related to building their website. Additionally, much of the search engine optimization they've done is inadequate and needs additional focus because it's not targeted enough.

Focus on your theme and build all of your seo efforts around it. Meta tags, in-bound links, etc. should all be targeted. The more content you build up in a particular theme, the stronger your search engine results will become. Get started today - but not until you've defined your niche.

Off-Page Optimization:

 The following steps are some suggested ways of doing off-page optimization of your web site:

1. Link Building.  Work to get relevant inbound links to your web site from high PR web pages. Remember that the inlinks should be related to the main theme of your site. Don't go for excessive reciprocal linking or else you may be penalized. Usually, three way linking is preferred by many to get backlinks to their web sites.

2. Avoid Bad Linking.  The older your backlinks are, the better. Try to stay away from temporary links as they will vanish after sometime, doing little to help your site rankings.

3. Anchoring Texts.  Use your targeted keywords in the anchor text of backlinks that point to your site.

4. Site Map Submission. Create a Google sitemap and submit it.

5. Avoid Cross Linking.  Don't go for excessive cross-linking.

6. Article Marketing.  A good ways to get backlinks to your site is to write quality articles and submit them to article sites. If you offer some unique and useful information, your article will get easy approval. This in turn will offer a free backlink to your site.

7. Search Engine Submission.  Submit your web site to the popular search engines manually.

8. Directories Submission.  You can submit your site to some niche directories. However, it is better to avoid the free-for-all directories where no approval is required to get your site listed.

8. Using Good Web Host.  Use a reliable host for your web site that helps your web pages loads fast and is not hosting bad sites (because you will surely not love to have your web site in bad company).

Some other popular methods for search engine optimization include link frames and stuffing the content on the website with optimum number of keywords. However, it is extremely important to note that sites which have relatively high number of keywords stuffed into the content or have employed more than two or three search engine techniques in a prominent manner, might end up being categorized under spam by search engines.
