Have you decided on learning French? If so, there are a few tips that will make things much easier for you. Here are a few of the best ones to help you make the learning process more exciting and to assist you in grasping the language much more easily.
No matter what your reason for learning French may be, you’re probably feeling a little intimidated. Many people we’ve talked to feel like they’re starting on a journey that will never end, and that just speaking their new language might take years.
However, that’s not really true. While many courses and schools out there use out of date teaching methods, making it seem like a chore to learn French, there are now a number of self study courses out there that are better. They use learning methods developed by psychologists, and can cut down the time it takes for you to learn a new language.
You might be thinking about hiring a private tutor or taking a class at a formal school, but these may not give you the kind of results you want. That’s because classes tend to heavily focus on reading and writing components of language, not the process of actually speaking them.
Since many students are in class to learn to speak French, this can be pretty frustrating. The best bet is finding a self study program that’ll allow you to learn on your own and help you become fluent in conversational French.
Here are three tips to further enhance your learning experience:
1) Like you mom always said, make sure to listen!
It’s amazing hoy much information you can pick up just by listening to other languages. You won’t necessarily understand all that’s being said, but listening to others talk in French allows you to pick up the flow of speech, new words, and the basic language structure.
It’s a good idea to watch a French movie with English subtitles. This lets you hear the language while also knowing exactly what is being said.
One of the students we worked with downloaded a whole season of a French TV program and watched them all. By the end of it, she had improved her French skills drastically and even had a grasp on the slang and nuances of the language.
2) Practice but don’t practice too much
You’ve probably been told that practice makes perfect. However, one of the big reasons that people give up learning French is because it turns into a boring chore.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t practice. Instead, take time to vary how you practice and do whatever’s needed to keep up your motivation. Don’t set up scheduled learning unless that’s how you learn best.
That allows you to engage in the language without feeling restricted by a particular schedule.
3) Mix up your practice to keep things exciting
Remember that while you want to include some French in your daily routine, you don’t want to do the same thing and bore yourself. That means you should mix up what you do and when.
That means you could listen to a French program on television or on the radio, or do a lesson from your class or course. If you have French speaking friends, you can have a conversation. Daily newspaper readers can choose a few paragraphs and review how to translate them into French.
There’s lot of different ways to engage yourself in the language.
This last point is a crucial step in truly learning the language. By varying the way you learn, you are using different parts of your brain which helps you not only learn faster, but retain it much more effectively as well.
This is a big reason for the recent success of some of the online study courses. They do a great job of providing a variety of learning material which keeps students interested while stimulated the brain in the “right way”.
Learning French shouldn’t feel like a job. If you do it correctly, it’ll be exciting and fun. Just find the right course, stick with it, and follow the above tips and you’ll be able to speak the language in no time!
