The development of touch screen technology has paved the way for new devices like the PDA and touch screen laptops to take over the computer industry. The touch screen laptop computer is an interesting gadget to watch since laptops have over taken desktop in sales. The growing popularity is due largely to the improved capacity and features that a desktop cannot offer. One new feature of laptops is the touch screen feature and the ability of touch screen laptops to convert from standard to tablet PC mode.
At the same time, touch screens are popping up in grocery store checkouts and banking terminals nationwide while young boys and girls fight in back seats over whose turn it is to play with the game boy-esque touch screen toy currently becoming popular among children across the country. However, it is touch screen’s application as a personal computing device that best showcases the many uses of this versatile technology.
With that in mind, a touch screen laptop is ideal for everyday use whether you are a high powered business executive or an up and coming college or university student and they offer a variety of features and tools that are just not available on your standard laptop computer. For one thing, these computers are almost always thinner and sleeker - and thus lighter and more portable - than standard notebook computers and are great for slipping into a briefcase of backpack.
Usually, the laptop comes with a stylus. The stylus was first made popular by Palm Pilot but its pen-shaped design makes it a very useful tool for drawing and writing directly onto the screen. The two most intuitive tools we have for manipulating objects are our fingers and a pen like device; most touch screens, particularly touch screens of personal computers and recognize both.
In addition, the touch screen laptop will often times feature a “swiveling” monitor that allows the computer’s screen to be turned so as to run perpendicular to its optional keyboard, like a standard laptop, or flipped around to lay flat like a tablet, hence the interchangeable moniker, tablet PC. This feature allows you the option of using your computer in a standard, word processing format on a desktop or table as well as the ability to hold the computer in your lap and use it to jog notes or take minutes much like you would do on a traditional legal notepad.
While it is hard to imagine what the future brings in technological advances, it probably would incorporate touch screen user interfacing for a while before something better comes along. As more and more of our lives are digitized, we can safely assume that computer screens will increasingly become important parts of our daily lives.
Add in the portability factor and the powerful functionality of a laptop and you have something that can easily occupy a huge chuck of our time. It is very possible for touch screen laptops to take over the traditional laptop in the near future in terms of computer sales and as software improves to better handle the development of the hardware, don’t be surprised to discover yourself a proud owner of a touch screen mobile computer one day.
