You may or may not know that social networking sites are becoming the most popular online tools, especially for young people, for posting personal information, connect to a list of friends, and carry out other activities associated with “social networking”. Some people are also using social networking sites to find mates or friends, but there can be online predators
If you don’t think there’s a chance you could be injured or abducted, you could be sadly mistaken. The dangers increase every single time someone looks at your profile online. People are starting to find that social networking sites are not the best places to be a lot of the time. It’s okay to participate in social networking, as long as security is considered foremost.
Some people are charged with monitoring these sites, but they can’t be monitoring at all times. You never know who you’ll encounter on a social networking site. Online predators are intent on getting others to trust them, so you can’t predict who you’ll encounter and who might betray your trust.
Millions of people are using social networking sites where online predators are a reality, so that they can express something and possibly find friends. Online predators and child molesters are an unavoidable fact of life on these social networking sites. You don’t want to have the profile of you or anyone in your family visible to people like this.
Real names, addresses or ages are all pieces of information you would never give to strangers, so don’t do it online. You will have to get familiar with the facts to protect your children (or child) and prevent online predators from continuing. One social networking site has an application to set a file to “private” and that’s the best choice for your child if he or she is using social networking sites and you want to reduce the risk from online predators.
You can give information to family and friends and talk freely if you have the option of privacy. Take precautions when giving information when signing up. Protect your own privacy. Make sure you see what details your children might be giving out on their profiles. You can assure greater safety with good and responsible monitoring.
