As men age, one of the most serious considerations they have to take into account is protecting their prostate. Although the problems concerning the prostate are not quite apparent until a man reaches his 40s or 50s, still, utmost precaution must be followed. It would be much harder to cure the problem than prevent it.
The prostate gland is located under the urinary bladder. It surrounds the urinary tract and the lower end of the prostate is connected to the penis. It has a vital function of providing the semen the necessary nutrients it needs. A large part of the semen?s white fluid is supplied by the prostate gland. Since this gland is located very near to the urethra, any abnormality of the prostate will directly affect a man?s urination. Erection and ejaculation are also greatly affected by any problems with the prostate.
Although prostate cancer is the most feared problem of the prostate, there are other disorders that are equally dangerous as well. Prostatitis is the occurrence of infection in the prostate and the inflammation of it as well. This may be inflammatory or non-inflammatory and may be caused by bacteria. However, this is not a sexually transmitted disease. Enlargement of the prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) affects the urinary flow since the tract is blocked due to the space occupied by the enlarged prostate. Prostate cancer is of course, caused by a tumor. It is a very serious problem since it is considered the second cause of death among men, following lung cancer.
Prostate disorders are cured through various methods. Men may opt for drug-intake, radiation treatments or surgery. Those who are seeking for these methods must be cautious however. The risk and complication these pose to a patient are at high levels. Intake of drugs like antibiotics only removes the pain and swelling of the prostate, but does not cure it entirely. Radiation treatments affect healthy cells the same way they act on unhealthy ones. This is why the need for natural prostate formulas is so intense among men.
Ingredients contained in natural prostate formulas are mainly obtained from plants. Since they are good for the body, they are considered safe for everyday intake. The popular ingredients include bet sitosterol, vitamins, zinc, selenium, pumpkin seed and lycopene. Other manufacturers even include unique plant extracts like nettle root, saw palmetto and pygeum.
Among the many components available, beta-sitosterol is considered to be the most valuable in the treatment of BPH. This component aids with the maintenance of the urine flow which in turn, reduces the risk for complications to occur in the bladder and the kidney. Soy products are the main source of beta-sitosterol.
Zinc and selenium are essential minerals for a healthy functioning of the prostate. Lycopene, being an antioxidant, aids in the maintenance of healthy DNA function among prostate cells.
The other components provide different contributions to the treatment of prostate problems. Saw palmetto is an anti-inflammatory and prevents testosterone from transforming into dihydrotestosterone. The latter is found to be dangerous to the prostate if present in high levels. Pygeum acts on the incessant urge to urinate that one feels when having an enlarged prostate. Nettle root serves as a defense for prostate cells against high levels of estrogen hormones which affect the prostate negatively.
Still, the best solution would be to exert extra effort in attending to the need of the prostate. It does not matter if symptoms are not yet occurring. What is important is to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to avoid future problems from surfacing.
