When you are ready to apply to college one of the first steps you should take is to figure out how you are going to pay for it. Financial aid is available in many different formats.
Financial aid is any monetary help to pay for college tuition. This can be scholarships awarded to a student based on merit, a federal loan from the Government, a student loan from a lending institution such as Citibank, or any type of grant.
Most people break financial aid into two main groups, money you borrow and money that is given to you with no need for repayment. There are a lot of options for both but for this article let’s focus more on free money, or money that you do not have to pay back. You can group this into a general category that we will call Scholarships. Most of the time these are partial scholarships so some of your tuition and expenses are covered. These can be based on academics, sports, or other criteria such as ethnicity or program of study.
It is very difficult to get funding that can cover your entire college funding needs. Often you can combine several scholarships and cover most of your financial requirements through various sources. This is why it is so important to apply for as many scholarships as you think you might qualify for. You can find out which scholarships meet your needs and you might qualify for at by doing some internet research and following the suggestions below.
Here is a checklist to help guide you through the process of receiving academic scholarships to help fund your education:
1. Most high school programs have a college counselor to help you identify which scholarships you might qualify for. Make sure you ask for any scholarship booklets that the school can provide or that colleges have sent you your high school.
2. You should take the list of colleges you want to apply to and call each one. You should request the financial aid office and then ask them to send you a scholarship booklet if they have one.
3. There are many websites dedicated to college scholarships, the problem is that many of them are set up just to capture your information to sell you other products. You may want to review a good government website students.gov.
4. Scholarships are competitive. But they are also extremely beneficial and rewarding. Many of them have you competing in some form against other applications. There are a number of essay type scholarships. Make sure to research how to compete properly for any given essay.
5. Some essays are very challenging and may take a lot of time to complete, don’t let this discourage you. Some of the toughest scholarships to apply for may also be some with the fewest applications.
6. You’re not the first one to apply for a scholarship. Utilize resources that are available to you. Each university has entire departments filled with dozens of people that specifically help prospective students attend their university. Do not be afraid to ask for help.
7. Letters of recommendation are gold. It is never too early to request letters of recommendation. If you can pocket a letter of recommendation from a distinguished individual, such as your principal, superintendent, or any sort of prominent individual, you instantly gain an advantage when applying for anything. Letters of recommendation can be used in almost any situation, including scholarships and grants.
8. It is very important to start the scholarship application as soon as possible. Don’t wait until you need the money as most of the applications are due long before the money is granted, in some cases a year or more in advance.
Applying for college money can be stressful, if you follow the 8 steps above hopefully you will find the process will go bye easier. Take the applications one at a time and make sure to complete all the needed points so that you have an opportunity to get your application reviewed.
Good luck on getting money for college and enjoy your college experience!
