Horse racing is a sport that has lived for centuries. It started back through the Roman era during their practice of chariot racing. But horse racing has consistently grown through the years.
There is a great variety in the different types of horse racing. Each race is determined by where it is being held and what type of surface the horses are racing on.
All horse racing surfaces are flat but some of the surfaces that races are held on are dirt polytrack, or even grass.
There are three traditional types of horse racing: Thoroughbred racing, quarter horse racing, and harness racing. In the horse racing world there are several high profile races. Perhaps the best race is the Kentucky Derby, which is held every spring.
This race is actually a community event that is surrounded with celebration luncheons, and even the ritual of ladies put on pretty dresses and enormous hats while the men come up to dressed to the competition in suits.
On the other hand, the event is not just about the fashion. It is about the winning horse really. The Kentucky Derby matched together with the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes races make up the Triple Crown. Winning all three of these with one horse is by far the largest accomplishment in horse racing.
