Whoever the very person was who came up with the idea of smoking something could not have been right in the head. When he or she first tried it and they got choked and coughed their head off, did they not think that it was possibly a bad thing? Then there are the rest of us who followed suit and had to try it to because at least temporarily the coughing stopped and it somehow became pleasurable in some weird and twisted way.

You can ask anyone who has smoked for years how long that pleasure lasted after it became an addiction that they could not stop or seem to live without. Eventually the serious choking and coughing returns and then you are addicted and wish you could stop. It is not as easy as all of that to quit like non smokers think it should be.. Many people have tried to quit numerous times only fail again and again.

It is hard to give up almost thing that you are addicted to, but cigarettes seem to be one of the worst there is to kick. People have tried chewing gum, hypnotism, medications, and support groups and still can not quit or they start back at some point. Sometimes it seems as if there is nothing left to do except keep on smoking and die. Well, this is one option, but not very recommended.

Some people find it easier to quit when they gradually decrease the number of cigarettes they smoke per day. Quitting cold turkey does work for those who have the will power to do it, but for others, cold turkey only adds to the anxiety of quitting. When you gradually take away the nicotine, the separation anxiety and the physical addiction is not as great. Of course, this only works if you stick with the program and continue to decrease each few days.

It is true for most people that learning not to smoke will be harder than it was to start smoking. You have to relearn how to everyday things without a cigarette and in the end you can take all the medications you want, chew all the gum in the world, but if you are not truly committed to quitting, nothing will work. You have to want to quit bad enough to stick with it. People who quit trying to quit, never will stop. Just because you have tried a few times to quit and failed, never give up because every cigarette you do not smoke is a little longer your life will probably last.
