Aggression in dogs is a very serious and potentially dangerous problem in most dogs. However, the problem can easily be solved by having dog aggression training.
Millions of people have experienced instances of dog bites and in most of these reports those people are children.
There are many different factors that may cause your dog to become aggressive, these include their normal environment and the fact that they can inherit these traits. In some cases, such as with the Akita or the American Bulldog, dogs are pre-disposed to being more aggressive. In other situations of aggressive behavior, it is usually because dogs are pack animals and it is normal for one dog to take the leader of the pack position, therefore they will try to establish themselves as the leader by use of aggressive behaviors.
The first step in resolving dog aggression is to fully understand the problem and what’s causing it. You will then be able to teach your dog not to succumb to these aggressive tendencies. You should also make sure your dog respects you, the best way to gain respect is by cementing your place as the Alpha Dog. Your dog will then be much more likely to follow your leadership and give you less problems.
Dogs might be aggressive due to being afraid or out of their comfort zone. Other common situation where dogs are aggressive is when they are trying to protect their homes, or when they come face to face with another dog of the same sex.
One of the first things you should do to stop your dogs aggression is try to get your dog used to being around other dogs, let your dog socialize with other dogs. You can start letting your dog socialize with others as soon as it reaches 3 months of age. Adult dogs will often need more than just additional socialization. Specialized training may be required.
Regardless of how stubborn your dog may seem, with consistency and persistence you can train it to be less aggressive. Make sure you are seen as the Alpha Dog and have the respect of your dog - this will make the training that much easier. Positive reinforcement and praise goes a long way, use it when your dog behaves the way you want him to and he will learn over time how he should be behaving.
Lastly, aggressive dogs can be dangerous, so you will need to take the time to train slowly and without fear. If however you notice that the aggressive behaviors are not getting better then you should take your dog to the veterinarian or to a qualified dog trainer.
