I always preferred float fishing and was very happy to see my collection, not many in mass, but appropriate for all sorts of waters, and there was also a spinner for pike that I had forgotten about.

What with my wife going back to work following a long sick leave due to breast cancer treatment since April in a couple of weeks, and the prospect of the weather becoming milder through February and March, the call of the canal towpath will probably be overwhelming now that I have chosen to update the fishing tackle and resume fishing again.

When I do return, I will need to spend some change\money, the priority is getting a rod licence and joining the Birmingham Anglers Association who manage fishing on the canals in the area here, then I will need some new fishing tackle as mine is elderly and possibly illegal now, especially the hooks which all seem to have barbs which I’m pretty sure aren’t permitted now.

I can’t wait to resume, though I’m not embarrassed to confirm that I was always and assuredly will be now, a very fair weather angler, so I will need dry, warm conditions. I’d always been after a big fishing tackle box that doubles up as a seat just since by definition it is so functional. However, during wet weather I wonder if they will tend to form pools which you really would not want to sit on without waterproof trousers. Holding that in mind, we must now remember that we have a big fishing tackle box to double as a footstool over one shoulder, I have a rod case over the other shoulder which will also be holding some sort of garden chair, a keep net and landing net in 1 hand which will only leave 1 hand available to carry something like a hot drinks flask, or bait if there isn’t room in the box.

But as long as the day’s fishing is enjoyable, it will all be worthwhile. And even if the fish are not necessarily feeding, if it’s a warm day then a little solitary time with nothing to do other than contemplate anything that comes to mind can be counted as a good day’s fishing. When I left sixth form college, “by mutual consent” as the football slang has it, after the 1st year when it was obvious that I had played about too much in the first year to have any possibility of passing any A levels at the end of the second, would have been the best time to spend spring and summer evenings with my fishing tackle instead of working over some economics homework.

And as I was working, in a department store caf, I was earning and had more money on the hip than I’d ever had previously plus a day off during the week which would have been perfect to get out to the fishery and have a few hours if not an entire day angling with the place practically to myself. Even better, since I was working in Guildford, visiting the fishing tackle shop could have been straightforward and I could have had pints of maggots to drown. This was rare before I left education as our village didn’t have a fishing tackle shop apart from a very small part of a shop had a limited selection, and definitely no live bait on offer, and to go into Guildford and back having been to the fishing tackle shop to get some would have taken a long time and was not worthwhile.

In subsequent years, I worked for a monolithic utility company in Staines which had it’s own angling lake and for some reason I never felt the urge to draw stumps for the day, get the scruffs on and enjoy an hour down there after work. In later years, again I was employed by for a firm that had it’s location right on the waterfront, and very often on breaks a group of us would go and sit on the steps on a nice hot day and watch people fishing, and as every alternate week saw my shifts ending at 4 o’clock, it would have been very straightforward to get the fishing tackle out of the car and finish off the day with a couple of hours fishing. I might have enjoyed the job more too, thinking about it.

We know other priorities turn up as you go through life. After I left 6th form I enjoyed pubs in quite a major way. I don’t know how many worms there might be, but when I pull off the tops to empty the grass from the bucket or the bin in the kitchen, a mass generally falls off the underside and the top is completely crawling with them, so I should think that they go all the way down. There’s loads of slugs too, but I have no plan of adding them to my bat and tackle to see if the fish like them as they are just too revolting. And besides, we know fish like worms, so why experiment? That makes no sense.

I could have been able to uncover some worms out of the garden, but as ours was a heavy clay area they were often difficult to come by, even when the ground was not bone hard which it generally was through the summer holidays when I wanted to go fishing.

These days I have no such worries. Angling is an opportunity for anyone to be able to spend some quality time by oneself, consider where life is taking one and what can be altered, what is going well and what is not. One has so few opportunities to be alone and I really believe that could be a source for an acceleration of unwanted stress. For instance, I work at home, my wife has also been at home on long term sick leave since after getting breast cancer in April 2010. The main thing is that as I am at home, I have been able to support her, transport and be with her when she’s been having chemotherapy and radiotherapy and then subsequently when she’s been suffering the after effects I can look after our four year old.

However, the converse was that, mainly during the radiotherapy, which was every weekday, I was not able to get on to doing any work. After the journey to the hospital and back, which was at least a ninety minute exercise, then driving Will to kindergarten, having a bite of lunch, getting Will again and coming home, there was hardly a period of an hour or more until late in the day when I could actually get on with doing anything which obviously meant that any idea of getting the fishing tackle out of the garage and doing a bit of fishing was all but out of the question. This increases my stress levels lots, with little chance of taking a decent break.

What is going on now is that things are calming down. Chemo and radiotherapy is over, and the present Mrs Izzard is looking to return to work on January seventeenth which is very exciting. She will have to have an intravenous herceptin treatment every three weeks but there are no unpleasant side effects from that. So, because she will be picking up Will from school on her way home every day, it could be that if I wanted to, I could pinch a few hours of an afternoon doing some fishing at one of the nearby canals. I do have to get some new fishing tackle before I can do anything, as well as get a rod licence and enrol in the Birmingham Angling Association to be qualified to fish the canals, but maybe I can get it all done by the time she returns to work.

Whether I can spend an afternoon fishing of course, will rely on work and whether I can be finished and done in the mornings to be able to leave it and exchange the laptop for the fishing tackle. Perhaps Friday afternoons will be the easiest to justify, but at least since I work for myself then I will know whether I absolutely can afford to bunk off.

I do wonder how that works though. The rods they used were spindly things, they can’t have been more than two feet in length, and I wonder how, if the fish they are after are combaitive, they cope. Perhaps it’s just me, but if I am into a big fish that is less than sweet on the thought of being hauled into the edge and out of the water, then one of the requirements is to move about the bank to stop it sprinting for weeds or a clump of tree roots. Or maybe, ice fishing needs such heavy duty bait and tackle that as soon as they get a bite they just haul it in with no need to worry about the line busting.

But then, that can’t work because surely the line is clearly visible to the fish, so it would have to be either very moronic or inattentive. The utter point of tackle dangling to my mind is to select the bait and tackle to fool the fish into supposing that all is well and it’s in for a nosh using the tastiest bait and tackle set up as light as possible and meant not to be spotted and when the fish bites and you strike to hook it, the real ability comes in, playing the line out when it runs, bringing it in when it rests and trying to make certain that it doesn’t break the line and escape.

I say that ‘I’ caught, naturally in reality my old man set up my bait and tackle and my uncle showed me how to cast so that was about the extent of my skill. I seem to recall that that weekend I was also donning my first fur lined parka jacket. The things you remember eh?

In my early teenage I got very enthusiastic and I was part of a group of chums who would go to our nearby fisheries on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. And, if I wasn’t playing football or rugby, I would go for the day on a Saturday. And if I was I would try and go for the afternoon after the game if there was time.

Most of my bait and tackle was quite old and second-hand. Our village did not boast a dedicated fishing tackle shop but we had a mini department store that retained a small stock. For bigger and better stuff you had to get a bus into Guildford. We also did not have a place close enough that sold maggots, so very often bait mixtures would appear, and hunting worms was a pretty important requirement.

We also used to go out to a small river at the outskirts of the village which was a bit risky as we rarely had permits for it but it was always good sport if you could get a good swim. I recall once getting into a shoal of gudgeon and having thirty minutes of glee pulling them out and letting them go again in an almost continuous motion. I know vegans, I know, not much fun for the fish but then again, being a wild fish isn’t much fun at any time as far as I can see. And when I went home I did chuck in the remainder of my bait for them to scoff in peace.

Those were wonderful days, I remember with great clarity the old lady who lived down the road from the lakes that we had to see first to get a day permit and strolling around the two ponds to see who was already in place, picking a pitch if your favourite wasn’t available and then getting the bait and tackle set up for the day and putting the first cast of the day out into the water. Then later, the excitement as somebody hooked into a tench, all of us gathering round proffering advice on how best to play it and then hope to be the one to be asked to hold the landing net as it comes into the bank.

Those were halcyon days, an early time when as kids we would released to make our own entertainment, no trouble, no mischief or annoying other people. I do wonder how many teenagers at the age now that we were then would be able to do that. I don’t know, but I expect it’s not so simple now.

Instead I preferred going to the pub, and it was plenty of years later when I was working with a mate on a warm clear day as we walked past a lake at lunchtime and could see the carp swimming at the surface that I mentioned that today was an idyllic day for angling with a floating crust. He had no clue that I enjoyed tackle soaking and I’d forgotten, but he promised he’d work out out a day for us to go. He did, though when he looked at my bait and tackle, he advised I threw most of it out as it was too ancient, too rubbish or just plain illegal.

So a visit to a fishing tackle shop was timetabled when we went and I shelled out an eye-watering stash of cash on bait and tackle as well as a rod licence and permits. We had a fine day and I caught the bug again, and my pal asked if I would like tripping off for some weekend tackle soaking. I thought that was a cool idea and he organised for us to go down and spend some time on the Avon near Christchurch and we travelled down on the Friday night, checked into the bed and breakfast and got an early sleep and we were up at a horrible hour which came as a jolt to me for a Saturday, but by the time we pitched up to the river, dug in, got set up I had recovered my equilibrium and had a fabulous day, changing bait and tackle set up as the thought took me.

It was interesting in the evening when we went into Christchurch for a drink, as it became obvious how important angling and the Avon is to Christchurch. Many of the pubs had pictures of fishing scenes, stuffed prize carp and copies of the fishing newspapers with the rest of the papers.

On the Sunday we went back to the fishing tackle shop and replaced bait and tackle that had been lost or used on the Saturday and had another marvellous day by the water. I even made friends with a water rodent that was interested my maggots and I kept chucking him a few and he came really close.

It was a superb weekend and I got home totally shattered and retired for an early sleep and a decision to do it again as early as I could.

The snow could mean that instead of venturing out into the rural areas with bait and tackle, that people get the serious outdoor clothing on and pack the camera instead and make the most of the wonderful scenes since despite the devastation to travel, once you get on from that it is amazing out there. Anywhere with a tree is going to look like it should be on a picture postcard. However, there is a disadvantage, because the weight of the snow has caused the buddleia on my drive to break which is very annoying.

I assume that the only business being done at the fishing tackle shop this week is going to be for people shopping for gifts for fisherman chums and relatives so that is most likely the upside of what at any other month of the year would mean bleak trading indeed. If it was me and it wasn’t Christmas week, I would either be firmly at home or getting on some sturdy boots, taking the camera and my little boy and sallying out into the Black Country hills.

Another positive of venturing out into the countryside of course is that there is always the likelihood of finding a new location to drown maggots, either a pond or lake that had otherwise escaped notice or a part of a river that might offer a decent day’s sport. We don’t have many rivers in the immediate district near here, though the Severn Valley is thirty minutes away, but there are many canals and a trundle along the towpath could be useful if a place can be found to take the bait and tackle in more temperate times.

We are being led to believe that this weather is unusual but is it? This is what the winter was like when I was a youngster, though not normally in the run up to xmas, but it was normal to get it in January and February and these were the times when expeditions with bait and tackle were out of the question, and with the end of the season approaching anyway, from December to June I would very rarely bother to go maggot drowning and find something alternative, preferably warmer, to do instead. And this is what we should be doing; exercise off the fat grown over the Christmas season, get out and look for somewhere fresh to go when fishing becomes possible again.
