Many people that are suffering from back and neck pain, muscle weakness, and joint problems are diagnosed with a herniated disc or disc herniation. The main occurrence of a disc herniation is when the layer of cushion that lies between the spinal vertebrae is moved from its usual location.

Spinal discs are elastic. When spinal disc looses its elasticity, it can eventually lead to disc rupture. This can actually lead to herniated disc which cause the spinal cord nerves to become pinched and compress the space in between the spinal nerves and spinal cord.

There are several different ways that people can get a herniated disc. In many cases these problems are cause by aging. This is the reason that so many people will eventually experience these types of problems sometime throughout their lifetime. However, these herniated discs can be caused by many other things as well. Pretty much any type of intense pressure that is applied to the disc of the vertebrae can cause these types of problems. For example, spinal injuries and even things as simple as heavy lifting can be direct cause of herniated discs and other related problems.

If you are diagnosed with herniated disc, there are a lot of things that you might want to avoid doing. It is advisable that you stay away from heavy lifting, sudden twisting, and intense sports that can increase or put stress in your spinal column.

People who are more exposed to sports activities may be at a higher risk of developing a herniated disc later on in life. Sports such as golf can actually cause spinal problems due to twisting of the spinal cord when swinging the golf club. it is best to take extra caution when engaging in similar sports to avoid developing a herniated disc later on in life.

The good news is that there are many different things that you can do in order to prevent these types of problems. One great way of preventing these problems is talking with your doctor or medical health professional in order to determine methods of treatment that you can use on your own after a particular activity or sport. This is your best option aside from just not taking part in that sport or activity anymore.
