Dead and Gone the 9th book in Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse series which has been adapted into True Blood Season 2 for HBO TV.
Dead and Gone is set in small town Louisiana, in a place known as Bon Temps. Its a little town but theres a lot that goes on there, not least ” a closely guarded secret is about to be revealed with some dire consequences!
On the whole everyone tends to get along relatively well, with the occasional mishap thrown into the mix, however. In this particular episode, Sookie (the main female protagonist) finds out that her brother Jason has been accused of brutally murdering his estranged wife. Furthermore, she is the target of a big bad fairy prince, which Ive alluded to already and you would know that if you were paying attention.
Sookies brother ” Jason ” quickly becomes the prime suspect and as if this were not enough, she then learns that a fairy prince is seeking to murder her. Ive always loved fairies but in this case I have to be on Sookies side so come on Sookie, we know you can handle this!
Many Sookie fans have been anxiously waiting to find out if Sookie will commit herself to Eric and the truth of it comes out in this book. Romance is in the air again, after the 8th book in the series ” From Dead to Worse - seemed to shy away from it and kept fans clinging on for more ” rather more than perhaps they were to get.
It does seem though, that Sookie is dishing out more of her stand-offishness to Eric as she did previously with Bill and with Quinn. Oh, women!
The last book ” From Dead to Worse ” was long and there was great detail. In this, the 9th book of the series, this is not the case, which is quite a contrast really. This book at times can come across as being somewhat disjointed. You are left wondering how did that happen or how could that be. One comment I read recently from a Sookie fan was that this book should have been called Dead and Thrown Together. Sad that some fans feel that way, but maybe she had a point.
Not enough is made of certain events that warrant some importance and more detail, when in my mind a more thorough exploration of the sequence of events was called for.
On the other hand, the book is fast-paced and there is no room for complacency or boredom. There are a number of new characters introduced as old ones depart, which brings about in me both some happiness and sadness at the same time. Say hello, wave goodbye Sookie continues to be humorous and quirky which is why we all love her so much and cant help but to love her!
So in all, it would seem to me that Charlaine Harris has written this book in a bit of a hurry and finished it rather too abruptly for comfort, albeit with some wonderful touches throughout. Thats a pity really but once again I am admittedly left waiting with much anticipation for the next book in the series to come out ” A Touch of Dead - which is due out in October 2009, to see if we can get back to the former glories of the Southern Vampire Mysteries that we once knew!
We havent long to wait either as the next book ” A Touch of Dead ” is due out in October 2009. Mmmm I wonder whats in store for us then?
