The snow we’re enjoying (well I am, to browse social media and listen to the radio, it seems as if everyone else is moaning like Aussies) is putting me in mind of one of my favourite movies, Grumpy Old Men with Walther Matthau and Jack Lemmon. I like the bits where they all go out onto the lake where they all have their own tiny lean to’s for holding their bait and tackle and shut themselves up inside and fish through the ice.

I’d completed my first year at 6th form college in Godalming and had made a hash my first year exams, wasn’t enthusiastic about the second year coming, didn’t want to go to university so my enthusiasm wasn’t the strongest. Eventually I had a series of bust ups with the head of year and we, as football parlance has it, separated by mutual consent. And I had a Saturday job in a Surrey department store that I upgrade to full time with that was very tempting. Close to the same time, I stopped fishing. How dumb was that? I had so much more time through not having to do college work in the evenings any more, and I well recall that I was a bit startled one time convinced that there was something I was meant to be engaged in and it took me some time to acclimatise. So I might have used that time by going to the fishing tackle shop and updating my bait and tackle since all of a sudden I had lots more money than I’d ever had in my life.
