The Dead Zone is about a man named Johnny Smith who acquires a special power after emerging from a coma. It was written by Stephen King in 1979, and is a great novel of his. The Dead Zone was also adapted in to a movie and television series, demonstrating its intrigue and popularity.
Although the name John Smith is the most clich and overused named in literary and historical history, the character is quite unique. At a young age, Johnny fell on his head playing ice hockey, which partially unlocked his power to see in to the future, as well as see events that are happening presently but he is nowhere close to.
It is not until later, when Johnny is in a head on collision with a truck, does his full power emerge. He is in a coma for four and a half years before he awakens, only to realize he has lost the girl he loves, Sarah Bracknell, and must endure a painstaking recovery. It is during his recovery that he discovers his new power, which he sees as more of a curse than a gift.
Johnny’s initial test of his power occurs when he is working with his physical therapist. He touches her and gets a vision of her house burning down, and the therapist wonders to herself if she did indeed leave the stove on. It turns out Johnny was correct, although he has trouble convincing the doctors about the legitimacy of his newfound ability.
Johnny makes use of his abilities when he is called upon Sheriff Bannerman of Castle Rock to stop a serial killer. He also utilizes them to save lives of people he encounters. Most importantly, he discovers a terrible threat that threatens all of humanity.
Johnny’s most destructive enemy is Greg Stillson, who is introduced in the beginning of the novel when he kills a dog after being consumed with anger. In the present day, he has become a charismatic politician who is on his way to the Presidency. After Johnny encounters him at a promotional event, he finds out Stillson will inadvertently destroy the world.
The easiest way for Johnny to succeed is to assassinate Stillson, and his plan ultimately works in an unexpected way. While all of the novel is interesting, the ending is simply amazing and one of King’s best. Any fan of Stephen King will greatly appreciate the intricacy and greatness of The Dead Zone.
In the movie, Johnny is portrayed by Christopher Walken, and by Anthony Michael Hall in the television show. Also of interest is the fact that portions of The Dead Zone are mentioned in another fantastic King novel, Needful Things. The novel has also been parodied on a few shows, including South Park.
