The League of Gentlemen: Ex-army colonel registers the help of prior officers (through blackmail) to lug off large bank heist. High-style British humor makes this story of crime a pleasure. The Painted Veil: In 1925 London, a socially backward bacteriologist hastily solicits an appealing lady to wed him, and she concurs. While he sees that she’s been cheating, he forces her to go along with him to a remote outpost in China where there’s been an eruption of cholera. Albeit meant as punishment, this experience steadily changes and deepens their relation. Cast includes Naomi Watts, Edward Norton, Liev Schreiber, and Toby Jones. (125 minutes, 2006)

Little Vegas: Discreet comedy rotating around unconventional characters in trailer park in a barren region that Mafia developers desire to turn into a “smaller vesion of Vegas. Cast includes Anthony John Denison, Catherine O’Hara, Jerry Stiller, Michael Nouri, Perry Lang, and Bruce McGill. (91 minutes, 1990)

Foxy Brown: Bloodshed and little else in this story of Nurse Grier and her vendetta against a drug ring that has slaughtered her lover. Cast includes Pam Grier, Peter Brown, Terry Carter, and Kathryn Loder. (94 minutes, 1974)

The Little Thief: So-so personality picture of the title lass, a disassociated, amoral adolescent floating thiough life in postwar France. If she comes off as a girl Antoine Doinel, it’s since the original tale was cowritten by Francois Truffuut, who was allegedly preparing to film this at the time of his demise. Cast includes Charlotte Gainsbourg, Didier Bezace, Simon de la Brosse, Nathalie Cardone, and Raoul Billerey. (104 minutes, 1989)

Lantana: Moving, adult tale of relations obstructed by monotony, routine, and absence of articulation. LaPaglia plays a cop, whose matrimony has stagnated, leading him to have an affair. In the mean time, he examines the disappearance of a lady whose own matrimony is in danger. The film is beautifully nuanced at every turn. Cast includes Anthony LaLaglia, Geoffrey Hurry, Barbara Hershey, Kerry Armstrong, Rachael Blake, Vince Colosimo, Daniela Farinacci, and Peter Phelps. (121 minutes, 2001)

The Belles of St. Trinians: Humorous movie of Ronald Searle’s cartoons about an entirely insane school for gals, run by a dotty headmistress whose brother, a bookie, desires to use school to his benefit. Cast includes Alastair Sirn, Joyce Grenfell, George Cole, Hermione Baddeley, and Beryl Reid. (90 minutes, 1954)

Daniel: Phenomenal adaptation of E. L. Doctorow’s The Novel of Daniel, in reference to the kids of a few sequenced after Julius and Ethel Rosenberg who should encounter their hurtful heritage in order to handle their own lives in the difficult 1960s. Not without its imperfections, however overall a seductive and incredibly well-made film. Cast includes Timothy Hullon, Mandy Patinkin, Lindsay Crouse, Edward Asner, Ellen Barkin, Julie Bovasso, Tovah Feldshuh, Joseph Leon, Amanda Plummer, and John Rubinstein. (130 minutes, 1983)
